New York Mets owner Steve Cohen was clear in recent comments: The Mets will never have a captain while he owns the team.
Seems like there's a very clear, "Why not?" that can be asked. Fans also began wondering what Francisco Lindor thought of this.
After an offseason purging of the roster, a total facelift, Lindor is the one stalwart who remains.
He's as charismatic a leader as they come. If the Mets decided tomorrow they needed to have a captain, Lindor would get the honor in a heartbeat.
Apparently, though, that won't be happening.
Lindor was asked about the whole saga, and he shared his thoughts with MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
“I respect it,” Lindor said on Thursday. “This is definitely a Steve, front-office type decision. I respect it. At the end of the day… being named captain or not, I’m still going to act the same. This is not something that’s going to make me somebody different. So I respect it. I’m glad he put everything to bed, so that way we can stop talking about this. And move on.”

That answer, ironically, is exactly the kind of answer a captain would give.
He shows respect. He acknowledges that he's not going to change the way he behaves just because of a 'C' on his jersey. He tries to move past the narrative for the good of the team.
Lindor may not get known as the Mets' captain at any point in his contract that has another half-decade on it.
He will be known as their leader, though. He already was, and that won't change.
