Mets' first-round pick Mitch Voit's viral celebration has fans joking about 1986

On Sunday, the New York Mets made their first two picks of the 2025 MLB Draft, selecting Michigan infielder Mitch Voit and UCF shortstop Antonio Jimenez to bolster the farm system.

Every early draft pick comes with optimism. But not everyone comes with a backstory that includes going viral and having to apologize for it.

There's a lot more to Voit's game than a two-second clip, but for a rabid New York fanbase looking for any reason to love its newest addition, his most notable moment opened the floodgates.

Voit already has fans laughing

When Michigan hosted USC in March, Voit made the most of Big Ten competition. With three hits and four RBIs against the Trojans, Voit capped off his afternoon with an electric triple.

After sliding into third, Voit celebrated by pretending to snort the foul line.

After the clip went viral, Voit apologized on social media.

“I would like to apologize for my actions on third base yesterday,” Voit wrote on X. “I made an immature decision in the heat of the moment. The gesture I made does not reflect my character, the household I was raised in, or the block M that I represent in any kind of way. I take full responsibility for what I did, and I am truly sorry to all those who I have negatively impacted by doing this.”

It's safe to say he was forgiven, both by Michigan supporters and the Mets fans welcoming him on social media.

"Mitch Voit about to bring '86 vibes to Citi," one fan account joked. Another posted about the calendar turning back to 1986, when the polarizing, out-of-control Mets won their second World Series.

What Voit brings to the table

Technically, Voit is a two-way player, having pitched for two seasons at Michigan. While he hasn't ruled out taking the bump if necessary, fans should expect him to play second base, with a potential shift to third base or corner outfield down the line.

Even if he never pitches an inning in the minor leagues, it's no coincidence that history landed him in Flushing. Many teams feel that splitting time between hitting and pitching requires promising athleticism but opens the door for extra development because one spends less time specializing if they do both.

What stands out most is his ability to hit the ball hard and to do so while pulling the ball in the air. His strong bat-to-ball skills should elevate his floor, and a swing change could unlock his high-end exit velocities further.

As a college bat who was considered a small reach, the Mets will likely offer Voit an under-slot deal to maximize their prospects later in the draft. That shouldn't dampen the optimism surrounding his game. By the looks of it, Voit has already done everything necessary to earn admiration in New York. He only added to that during his initial media availability.

"I'm a winner. I'll do anything that it takes for the team to win."
