It's not a secret that the 2026 New York Mets have been one of the biggest disappointments in all of Major League Baseball. But now, they're 21-26, and with the vibes high amid a winning streak in May, things are looking up.
If the Mets can continue this hot streak, it's well within reason to believe they're not only going to be back in postseason contention, but also potential buyers at the trade deadline.
However, former MLB general manager Jim Bowden of The Athletic is projecting a different result this year at the deadline that Mets fans will not like.
Mets fans won't like this trade deadline projection from ex-MLB GM
"Trade deadline position: Likely sellers," Bowden writes. "They've dug themselves a huge hole, and I can't see a path for them to catch the Braves, nor do I think they'll be able to finish ahead of the Phillies."
The Mets, despite their recent hot streak, are still projected by Bowden to end up as sellers at this year's trade deadline.
This would be a massive disappointment for the Mets, as it would mean they aren't a legitimate postseason contender come the August 3rd trade deadline.

If the Mets did sell, they could field heavy interest in players like Freddy Peralta and Brett Baty, with Bowden also mentioning Devin Williams and Mark Vientos as potential trade chips as well.
Trading players would be a sign that the 2026 season is a failure. Bowden is projecting such a future to come to pass, and that's even despite the Mets' recent success.
But, Bowden believes the hole the Mets dug themselves into will be too big to climb out of by the deadline, and selling off some players to recoup prospects and future assets would be the best course of action.
David Stearns and Steve Cohen selling at the trade deadline would be an outcome that Mets fans would hate to see come to fruition, especially with their recent resurgence.
