Mets face tough decision on returning Frankie Montas after latest poor rehab start

ATLANTA — Frankie Montas’ final line for his potential last minor league rehab start before joining the Mets hardly suggests he’s ready for the big stage.

The right-hander had a rough outing over five innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Montas owns a 12.05 ERA and 2.14 WHIP in six minor league appearances after returning from a lat strain early in spring training.

With Montas’ rehab assignment clock set to expire on Sunday, team officials have to decide the next step, whether that means placing Montas in the Mets rotation or bullpen.

If Montas isn’t deemed physically sound, the team could look to restart his rehab assignment.

Manager Carlos Mendoza, following the 5-0 loss to the Braves, said he planned to speak with Montas on Thursday to get a better sense of the situation.

Tylor Megill’s placement on the injured list this week with swelling in his elbow has left a rotation vacancy the team will fill on Friday in Philadelphia with a spot starter — Justin Hagenman and Blade Tidwell are among the pitchers at Syracuse already on the 40-man roster — but ideally the team would like Montas in the starting mix next week.

Sean Manaea is scheduled for a fourth rehab start on Friday (and first for Syracuse) as he returns from an oblique strain.
