It's going to be hard for anyone in the New York Mets organization to get playing time at first base this season if their name isn't Pete Alonso.
Alonso is back to superstar status in 2025, leading the National League in most offensive categories. Meanwhile, the Mets have a Triple-A first baseman with recent big-league experience who could be an interesting trade chip.
Jon Singleton is in Triple-A Syracuse at the moment, and he's off to a red-hot start. Entering play on Sunday, he had a .965 OPS, seven home runs, and 18 RBI in 25 games in the Mets organization.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox suddenly need a backup plan at first base, thanks to Triston Casas' ruptured patellar tendon. Things could be lining up for the Mets to make a move, at least according to one baseball writer.
On Saturday, CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson proposed that the Mets could ship Singleton to the Red Sox to help replace Casas and thereby recoup some value for a player who's completely blocked at the major league level in New York.
"Singleton would seem to mostly fit the Red Sox's needs: he's a lefty hitter who produced league-average offense last year in a platoon role with the Houston Astros," Anderson wrote.

"He's certainly not going to leapfrog Pete Alonso anytime soon. One has to imagine the Mets would be willing to ship him to Boston if the Red Sox show interest."
Singleton famously made his return to Major League Baseball in 2023 after eight years of floating around the baseball universe, including a 100-game drug abuse suspension and a stint in Mexico. He compiled a .220/.310/.361 slash line in 155 games with the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers over the last two years.
From the Mets' perspective, getting anything of value for Singleton, even a lottery ticket pitching prospect, would be a win.
