Mets could potentially lose $130 million 4x All-Star to Red Sox

The New York Mets have had a very productive offseason. They won the Juan Soto sweepstakes, brought back Jesse Winker and Sean Manaea and added plenty more pitching.

Still, there are issues left unresolved for New York. Pete Alonso remains a free agent, and all signs now point to him departing for a new team. The Mets were unable to sign him in the window they gave themselves before deciding to pivot elsewhere.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report believes that there might end up being a fit for Alonso with the Boston Red Sox.

"Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado are the names most commonly associated with the Red Sox. Ha-Seong Kim is another hypothetical option, and there may even be a fit for Pete Alonso if the bridge between him and the New York Mets closes," Rymer wrote.

Boston already has Triston Casas at first base while Arenado and Bregman have been the two sluggers linked to them. But that doesn't mean they can't find a fit for Alonso somewhere.

As for the Mets, this loss would hurt. They would need to find a way to replace Alonso's presence in their lineup in order to be a threat to win a World Series title.

Their current plan is to move Mark Vientos over to first base and have competition at third base. But not having Alonso would make a big difference, and not for the better.

The four-time All-Star has been a fan favorite since his arrival in 2019, and things might be a little strange in Queens without him, as he has become a fixture in a Mets uniform.

We'll see if the Mets can work something out with him.
