The New York Mets' starting rotation has been the best in baseball this season. However, with Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea's returns looming, the Mets could trade one of their current starters.
Manaea and Montas both signed contracts with the Mets in the offseason, but suffered spring injuries. Tylor Megill, Griffin Canning, Kodai Senga, David Peterson and Clay Holmes have stepped up to form a rotation that boasts the best ERA in baseball. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller tabbed Megill as a candidate to be traded as Montas and Manaea return.
Megill has a 2.50 ERA through seven starts. He has notched 35 strikeouts and could be used to acquire a superstar near the trade deadline. He will not be a free agent until 2028. While Megill has proven to be reliable and deserving of a rotation spot, a player like Montas may not be movable, making Megill, Canning or Peterson the odd man out.
"The Mets might try to move Montas instead if Peterson or Megill stays hot, but his $17 million salary with a $17 million player option for 2026 might be just about untradeable," wrote Miller. "Regardless, they should have several arms available, with which they'll presumably be looking to upgrade in center and at DH to put the finishing touches on what they hope is a championship puzzle."
Megill is having by far the best season of his career, and his value has never been higher. The Mets could use him as a piece to bring in a star center fielder rather than someone who would be a slight upgrade.
