The New York Mets have been struggling lately. A seven-game losing streak knocked them out of first place in the National League East.
However, they are still on top in the Wild Card race with a 46-33 record. Given their early success this season, it appears likely that New York will be in the buyer's market at the trade deadline.
Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN recently listed the top 50 trade candidates this trade deadline.
Alex Bregman was on the list, with the Mets being a potential suitor.
"Bregman has been an elite big-league hitter since he entered the league in 2016 but has leaned more into power this year, with his highest isolated power since 2019. Most of his underlying power indicators (barrel rate, maximum exit velo, average launch angle and hard-hit rate) are at career highs. His $40 million salary -- and the chance to opt into two more years at $40 million annually -- significantly shortens the list of teams that would take on his deal."

The chances of a trade are slim, but Bregman could be a big upgrade for the Mets. They already have Mark Vientos at third base, but they could possibly shift Bregman to second base and play Jeff McNeil in the outfield.
Bregman is hitting .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI, a 2.9 WAR and a .938 OPS with the Boston Red Sox. He is currently on the injured list, but has been productive when healthy.
The 31-year-old is a two-time World Series champion, two-time All-Star, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glover. Adding him to the mix would give the Mets a great chance to battle back and steal the NL East from the Philadelphia Phillies.
New York is 1 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the East, and more power certainly wouldn't hurt as they try to make a run.
