The New York Mets have some big decisions to make.
New York clearly wants to bring in some superstar talent this offseason but it does have to worry about some internal free agents too. The Mets made some fantastic moves last offseason and one that stands out was signing veteran hurler Sean Manaea.
He had arguably the best season of his career in 2024 and had a 3.47 ERA across 32 starts. Unfortunately for the Mets, he's a free agent now. There's certainly a chance that he could return to town in 2025, but the Mets will have to pay him well.
New York offered him the qualifying offer of just over $21 million for the 2025 season, but he reportedly turned it down, according to ESPN's Alden González.
"Probably obvious already, but I'm told (starting pitcher) Sean Manaea will reject the Mets' $21.05M qualifying offer. Nick Martinez is accepting his and staying with the (Cincinnati Reds), as Francys Romero first reported. He's the only known player to take it thus far. Deadline is 1 p.m. PT tomorrow."
This doesn't mean that the Mets won't be able to find a way to bring him back, but they likely will have to give him a multi-year deal to do so. He was everything the Mets could've hoped for, but now we'll have to watch him closely over the next few months.
