Mets blockbuster trade pitch lands Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen

The New York Mets have had a shockingly good starting rotation, but that doesn't mean they should be finished adding to it.

Mets starters currently have a 2.85 season ERA, tops in Major League Baseball. Of the five pitchers with 12 or more starts on the season, four have sub-three ERAs, and number-five starter Tylor Megill's 3.76 mark is nothing to cry about.

However, without much name value to rely on, the Mets are counting on catching lightning in a bottle all season. Unless, of course, they land a big name at the trade deadline.

It's hard to say with certainty that any aces will be available at this particular deadline. But if the Arizona Diamondbacks' sleepy first half continues, there's a chance the Mets could nab former All-Star Zac Gallen.

In a recent article, Just Baseball's Zach Lutz made the case that Gallen could be a good fit for the Mets at the Jul. 31 deadline.

"The Mets are intriguing. Their rotation, consisting of Kodai Senga, Tylor Megill, David Peterson, Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning, is outperforming expectations, but lacks reliable top-end dominance," Lutz wrote.

"Gallen, a New Jersey native who played college ball at UNC, could be a compelling fit in Queens."

The 29-year-old Gallen isn't doing wonders for his trade value, pitching to a 5.13 ERA through 14 starts. He's worked into the seventh in each of his last two outings, though, and his hard-hit rate isn't even as high as it was in his 2023 All-Star campaign.

Gallen would be a bet on track record, and the Mets might not even get the chance to gamble on him. But it's certainly worth keeping an eye on the righty as the summer heats up.
