The New York Mets are getting Mark Vientos back, but they could still use an upgrade in the infield. They could target a player that their crosstown rivals are also eyeing.
The New York Yankees need in the infield is greater than the Mets. Brett Baty has struggled this year, but they are getting Vientos back. Meanwhile, the Yankees' infield has Jazz Chisholm playing third base, where he is not a great defender, because DJ LeMahieu is at second base. LeMahieu has struggled at the plate, and USA Today's Bob Nightengale noted that the Yankees are "keeping a close eye" on Eugenio Suárez.
However, the Mets could also use Suárez. Suarez has never played second base, but he has played shortstop in his career. Perhaps he could slide over to second base, allowing Jeff McNeil to play in the outfield. ClutchPoints' Cameron Zunkel actually suggested the Mets go and get Suárez.
Centerfield has been an issue for the Mets as well. Adding Suárez to play second base could allow McNeil to take over as the everyday centerfielder. Suárez would also be insurance at third base if Vientos cannot get back on track after his return from the injured list.
"The Mets would have to give up a couple prospects for the third baseman, but the price would be worth it. Suarez is a free agent after this season, so trading him would make a lot of sense for the Diamondbacks if they do not plan to bring him back in 2026," wrote Zunkel.

Suárez signed a seven-year, $66 million deal in 2018. He is playing on a club option this season. If the Yankees could add him to their batting order and keep the Yankees from getting him, it would be two wins for their organization.
