The New York Mets' starting rotation has been dealing with some injuries. They could target a rival starting pitcher at the upcoming trade deadline.
The Mets have Tylor Megill on the injured list, and Griffin Canning will miss the rest of the season. The team still has Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, but may want to add some depth or potential upgrades. One of their division rivals, the Miami Marlins, could have a great option for them.
Edward Cabrera is having a strong season, and the Marlins could look to cash in while his value is high. He has made 16 starts this year and is on pace to set a new career high for starts in a season. He has dealt with injuries in the past, but the Marlins could cash in while he's healthy. Bleacher Report's Tyler Ward tabbed the Mets as a fit for him in a trade.
He would not be a rental arm and would slot into the rotation for the next few seasons. He will not be a free agent until 2029, and has been great this year. He has a 3.61 ERA on the season.
Mets starters have the fourth-best ERA in baseball this season at 3.38. However, injuries could quickly put them off course. Manaea has not returned to the starting rotation yet, but he could after the break. Montas has a 5.03 ERA in his first four starts. If the Mets are not pleased with Montas, they may make an aggressive move to replace Canning's contributions before his injury. Cabrera could be a great addition if Montas struggles grow or Megill cannot return quickly.
