Mets blockbuster move would land projected $180M superstar image

The New York Mets could pull off a massive move this winter.

New York is in a good place, with the free agent frenzy expected to pick up in the not-so-distant future. The Mets could sign any free agent they want to this winter. New York has more money than anyone else and a manageable payroll.

The Mets are an enticing club for free agents this winter, and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand listed the club among "potential suitors" for Baltimore Orioles star Corbin Burnes.

"President of baseball operations David Stearns knows Burnes well from their time together in Milwaukee, where the pitcher was part of Stearns’ first Draft class as general manager," Feinsand said. "The Mets face the potential loss of Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Jose Quintana, so filling the starting rotation will be a priority this offseason. Whether the Mets are able to land Juan Soto could help determine how aggressive they will be on the pitching market."

Landing Burnes immediately would take the Mets to another level whether they land fellow star Juan Soto or not. A starting rotation featuring both Burnes and Kodai Senga would be scary for opposing teams.

Burnes is projected to get $180 million over six years by Spotrac and the Mets could afford that easily. The Mets aren't far away from being considered World Series contenders and landing someone like Burnes could be the quickest way to get them there.
