Mets acquire 3.89 ERA reliever in trade with Tigers

The New York Mets acquired a right-handed reliever from the Detroit Tigers on Monday morning.

According to an announcement made by the NL East club, the Mets have made a trade for Matt Seelinger in exchange for cash.

"New York Mets have acquired Toledo Mud Hens RHP Matt Seelinger for cash consideration. Seelinger had an upward mobility clause in his contract," Chris McCosky of the Detroit News added.

Seelinger has a 3.89 ERA in 27 apperances this season at Triple-A within the Tigers' minor league system.

"Detroit, it seems, didn’t feel it had the roster flexibility to add Seelinger to its own 40-man when he triggered his upward mobility clause — a contractual clause that, when triggered, forces a player’s current club to make him available to all other 29 teams," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors explained.

Seelinger is a former 28th-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates from Farmingdale State College in 2017.

He spent a season in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball in 2024 with the Long Island Ducks, allowing just one earned run in 20.2 innings.

The 31-year-old is yet to make his Major League debut. Seelinger could make it this year if the Mets are out of the postseason race and need an extra arm to eat innings.

For now, he adds to New York's bullpen depth.
