Mel Owens knows that "Bachelor Nation" is not his biggest fan at the moment since he made some controversial comments about his age cap on dating older women.
Owens appeared on In the Trenches, back in where the 66-year-old said he prefers dating women between the ages of 45 and 60 and that he would "cut" women who were "60 or over."
He also added that he wants to “try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff.”
Once social media caught wind of the clips, Owens received a lot of backlash for his comments, even with Steven Carbone (known as Reality Steve online) reporting that Owens would be out “as the Golden Bachelor due to recent negative publicity surrounding his June 4th podcast appearance.”
However, the report was not true, and he had already begun filming, according to Glamour. The show is set to release its second season on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
A close friend of his who also happens to be a fan of Bachelor Nation informed him that his comments went viral and what his next course of action.
“What you said was insensitive, and it’s just not who you are,” Owens told Glamour what his friend told him.
The former Los Angeles Rams star blamed his hiatus from dating for so long since his divorce from Fabiana Owens, whom he married in 2002.
"My reference of dating was 39, 40 years old. I hadn’t dated in 26, 27 years. That’s what I told her. She goes, “It doesn’t matter. You’ve said some things that are just incredibly wrong.” And I go, “I’ve got to apologize.”
Owens added that he wasn't aware of The Golden Bachelor ages and had only watched the original show back when it launched in 2002 and didn't watch the series anymore.
"So when these people talk about, 'Hey, this season and that season,' I didn’t know the age range because I wasn’t watching it. I’m thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That’s my age range. I’m thinking that’s the gold years for me. My reference, again, was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn’t dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that’s why I said that comment. I didn’t know."
Since Owens has begun filming already, he shared that he addressed the comments to the contestants on the show.
"I apologized to the women on the show. When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them," he continued. "I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.' And hopefully, these last two weeks I earned some of that back."
You can catch Owens' season of The Golden Bachelor on September 24 on ABC.
