Meet Ly Bui: The 17-year-old already changing the energy at Florida

1 hour ago 2

Florida gymnastics sophomore Ly Bui speaks with calm and confidence beyond her years and it was evident in Florida’s early success.

“So I think I was really calm from the start [last Friday],” Bui said. “I think my alarms were very good and then having all my teammates around me and energy was very high. So I was feeding off of their energy and so I felt very calm starting my vault and I was pretty confident that I was going to be able to do a pretty good vault.”

That confidence showed up again tonight when Bui competed on vault as the Florida Gators improved to 4 0 with a 197.425 to 197.275 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

“And then after my vault was done, obviously I got a pretty good score,” Bui said. “And I think that set the trend for everyone else and continuing the whole meet.”

That confidence has been earned. Last season arrived fast.

“I think I just had a lot more experience than I did last year because last year I came in maybe two weeks before,” Bui said. “So I was just like getting used to it getting the groove. And this year I’ve been here the whole preseason.”

Being just 16 at the time made fitting in harder.

“I don’t know if it was intimidation but I think definitely it was hard trying to fit in when I first got here because I didn’t really know anyone,” Bui said. “But now I’d say the relationship with everyone on the team is great. And I think we all have a very strong bond.”

That bond has helped steady her in the moment.

“Being in O’Dome with them has been a lot more comfortable and I think that has helped boost my confidence as well,” she said.

Even now growth is still part of the equation.

“I’m only 17. Haven’t really like stopped growing yet,” Bui said. “So I just have to like give myself some grace.”
