Mayor Zohran Mamdani is poised to lower speed limits to 15 mph across the city’s school zones 24 hours a day, sources confirmed.
The traffic safety announcement expected to be made Monday at 12:45 p.m. will use Sammy’s Law, a 2024 piece of legislation that allows city officials to set speed limits below the state minimum.
Sammy’s Law is named after Sammy Cohen Eckstein, a 12-year-old boy fatally struck by a car in Prospect Park in October 2013.
Under the law, the new lowered speed limits can go into effect after a 60-day public comment period.
Mamdani’s decision to lower speed limits in school zones was first reported by the New York Daily News.
