Max Homa one foot from history: Incredible PGA Championship shot just short of first par-4 hole-in-one at a major

8 hours ago 1

Max Homa nearly made major history during the second round of the PGA Championship.

The Burbank, Calif. native enjoyed a glistening second day in Charlotte, dropping sumptuous efforts all along Quail Hollow's glistening meadow. No shot was as splendid as the tee shot he conjured up on No. 14, a pearl of a drive which almost nestled its way into the cage — and major tournament history.

Here's what you need to know about Homa's almost par-4 hole-in-one.

Max Homa nearly sinks par-4 hole-in-one

Homa fell just short of major history on No. 14, dropping a 345-foot moonshot mere inches from the cup.

While a hole-in-one is improbable at a major tournament, it's not completely unprecedented. During Round 1, Eric Cole flushed an effort into the target on No. 4.

Homa's shot would have been historic, however. His effort came on a par-4, not a par-3 — the source of most aces.

A par-4 ace is practically unheard of at the PGA Tour level. There's only been one recorded instance of it on the Tour; back in 2001 when Andrew Magee canned his tee shot from distance at the Phoenix Open.

But even that effort is shrouded in controversy. Magee's effort ricocheted off a competitor's putter before slithering into the pit.

Homa's shot proved far more ethical than his predecessor. It didn't quite result in a hole-in-one. But his eagle more than made up for it, setting the stage for a strong second day at the links for the 34-year old.

Who is Max Homa's caddie?

After parting ways with childhood friend and longtime caddie Joe Greiner ahead of the 2025 Masters, Homa enlisted the service of Bill Harke, a staple on the bag who lent his expertise to fellow PGA Tour players Chris Kirk, Colt Knost and Jonas Blixt in the past.

A known Grateful Dead enthusiast, Harke offered insight to Kirk during wins at Sea Island, the Deutsche Bank FedEx Cup Playoff. He also accompanied Min Woo Lee in his conquest at the Scottish Open back in 2021.
