The Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA by trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. Now, rumors are swirling about a potential blockbuster trade that would reunite LeBron James and Anthony Davis in Dallas this offseason.
The Mavericks have the assets to make a major move — even for an aging superstar like James. However, the team reportedly has little interest in pursuing a deal, as they would have to give up a sizable haul to match his $52.6 million salary, according to The Athletic.
“One team linked to James — the Dallas Mavericks — does not have interest in gutting its roster to match James’ salary in a trade,” they wrote.
Several teams have been tied to the 40-year-old, including the Cleveland Cavaliers in a possible homecoming. But James’ lucrative contract makes any trade challenging. Any team hoping to acquire the four-time MVP would have to mortgage its future for what would likely be a short-term rental.

Entering his record-setting 23rd NBA season, James may consider retirement after the 2025-26 campaign. Regardless, he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.
All signs point toward the 21-time All-Star returning to Los Angeles for what could be his final season. If so, he’ll aim to win his fifth NBA championship alongside Doncic, Austin Reaves and Deandre Ayton.
Coming off an All-NBA Second Team selection in 2024-25, James continues to defy Father Time. He averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals across 34.9 minutes per game in 70 regular-season appearances last year.
