Mavericks could target All-Star veterans this offseason

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to seek backcourt help this summer, with Kyrie Irving unlikely to return from a torn ACL in his left knee until at least January.

With Spencer Dinwiddie and Dante Exum set to become unrestricted free agents this summer, the club may need to target outside help to fill the void at point guard during Irving’s absence.

According to Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report, the Mavericks could target Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Tyus Jones as potential short-term solutions.

Paul, who played in all 82 regular-season games with the Spurs in 2024-25, will likely prioritize joining a contender as he chases his first NBA championship The 12-time All-Star could be a strong fit in Dallas, where he would help facilitate an offense featuring Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Cooper Flagg while Irving is sidelined.

Westbrook, who declined his $3.4 million player option with the Nuggets, is also in search of his first ring and is likely to draw interest from playoff-caliber teams. The nine-time All-Star played a meaningful role in Denver this past season, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game across 75 appearances.

While Jones may not carry the same resume as Paul or Westbrook, he would be a cost-effective option to bridge the gap until Irving returns. Jones started 58 of his 81 games in Phoenix last season and shot a career-high-tying 41.4 percent from three-point range.

The Mavericks are expected to explore both free agency and the trade market for backcourt help, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the club bring in a veteran facilitator — even on a short-term deal.
