Matthew Golden viewed by NFL executives as breakout player in waiting

Matthew Golden’s stock just skyrocketed.

The Packers’ offense took a major hit when Josh Jacobs was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, though it appears executives around the league think they have a budding star at receiver who is waiting to explode. 

“I’m not really sure why they didn’t use him, but I loved him coming out,” an AFC executive said, per ESPN. “He can fly.”

Green Bay cleared the deck for Golden to be a major contributor this season when it let Romeo Doubs go to the Patriots and traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Eagles.

Usually a run-first offense, the Packers may need to lean on the air a bit more than usual with Jacobs presumably out, and quarterback Jordan Love might be looking to Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Golden in three-receiver sets.

“I think really what it’s gonna be is gonna be more opportunity for everybody in that room — or I should say for our three main guys — and we need them out there for as many plays as humanly possible,” coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Wednesday. “We know that this guy, speaking of Christian — I think all three of those guys are difference makers, but we need them out on the field for as many snaps as possible.”

Golden was a 2025 combine darling when he ran a 4.29 40-yard dash, the fastest among all receivers. He was selected No. 23 overall in the first round.

Golden played in 14 games (starting five) while buried behind other receivers, posting 29 catches for 361 yards. 

The University of Texas product appeared to break out in the playoffs a bit, recording four catches for 84 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Bears.
