Matt Fitzpatrick family tree: Meet golf brother Alex, parents, more to know about major champion's English roots

4 hours ago 1

Matt Fitzpatrick was born on Sept. 1, 1994, in Sheffield, England, but while he has been an avid football supporter of Sheffield United throughout his life, he took his talents to the golf course and developed a passion for the sport.

Fitzpatrick won the 2012 Boys Amateur Championship and made the cut at the 2013 Open Championship. He finished as the low amateur and earned himself a silver medal. Initially, Fitzpatrick enrolled at Northwestern University to play golf, but he dropped out in his first year to pursue a full-time golf career. He has now appeared in every major since 2016.

Fitzpatrick's biggest victory came when he won the 2022 U.S. Open, edging out Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris by one stroke. Fitzpatrick has 10 non-major wins to his credit, with eight coming on the European Tour and two on the PGA Tour.

Here is more on Matt Fitzpatrick's family, including his brother and parents.

Matt Fitzpatrick brother: Alex Fitzpatrick

Matt isn't the only golfer in his family as his younger brother Alex also competes. He spent his collegiate career at Wake Forest and turned pro like his brother Matt in 2022. While he followed in his brother's footsteps to golf, his mother maintains that, "Alex is a gifted soccer player and could have had a career in football, had he wanted to pursue it."

Alex was born on Jan. 2, 1999, making him about four and a half years younger than his brother Matt. He has one professional win under his belt. Alex shot a 12-under and secured the five-stroke victory over Stuart Manley, Ross McGowan and Tom Vaillant at the 2023 British Challenge. He has only qualified for one major so far in his career.

The younger Fitzpatrick finished tied for 17th at the 2023 British Open. While he didn't win, he did leave with some bragging rights as Matt finished that tournament tied for 41st.

Matt Fitzpatrick mother: Sue Fitzpatrick

We don't know much about Matt's mother Sue. She does seem to be able to hold her own on the golf course, though. Sue has been Matt's chosen partner at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship pro-am in Scotland three times. Usually, golfers tend to go with celebrities or influential people in business, but Matt chose his mom.

"The first time Matt asked me to join him, I was excited," Sue said about competing. But as the tournament drew closer, I started to think, ‘I don’t know if I can really do this.’ I was so nervous. If it had been cancelled at the last minute, I think I would have been relieved."

She joined Matt again the next year at the same pro-am, and they won, becoming the first all-family-squad to ever win both the team and individual titles. Sue said that she credited her golf game to her husband, who introduced her to the sport a few years after they got together.

Matt Fitzpatrick's father: Russell Fitzpatrick

Similarly to Sue, we know very little about Russell beyond his celebration with Matt after the 2022 U.S. Open victory and the fact that he used to be a banker. When Golf.com interviewed Fotzpatrick's mother, she talked about when her relationship started to blossom with Russell. He started playing golf when he was 14, and the couple met when they were 16.

"Russell started playing golf when he was 14, and he introduced me to the game a couple of years after we met. I took a few lessons, and Russell taught me the rest." Sue added that the couple married in their early 20s and started competing locally in mixed-foursome competitions.
