For a coach who is on the hot seat like Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, it's probably not a good idea to throw shade at the front office.
But Eberflus did exactly that during his media availability on Thursday when he pointed to the trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers as a problem for Dallas' defense during the 2025 campaign.
Eberflus was asked about when things changed for the Cowboys' defense, and he pointed to the Parsons trade as the moment that happened.
"Cowboys DC Matt Eberflus admitted things changed for defense when they lost an all pro pass rusher who can win quick. But you can’t look back," Cowboys beat reporter Clarence Hill Jr. relayed.
Eberflus isn't wrong. You don't simply lose a player the caliber of Parsons and expect things to get better.
But that doesn't totally absolve Eberflus, either, as the Cowboys had scheme issues as much as they had talent issues.
isn't doing himself any favors by taking a shot at owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who is ultimately going to decide his fate.
Maybe Eberflus knows he's done already, but if not he isn't doing himself any favors by taking a shot at owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who will ultimately decide his fate in the offseason.
When it comes to his job security, Eberflus said he isn't worried about that right now and is instead focused on the week at hand.
"My mindset has always been the same: one week at a time, one game at a time and your focus is on coaching the players," Eberflus said.
If Eberflus had any hope of returning to Dallas in 2026, he might have just closed the door on that.
