Mason Miller trade deadline update is bad news for Yankees fans

There might not be a more ideal trade deadline option for the New York Yankees than San Diego Padres superstar closer Mason Miller.

Of course, the price for such a trade would be extremely high, but adding such a talented pitcher to fill their bullpen need would be a dream-come-true for many Yankees fans.

However, ESPN's Alden Gonzalez shared an update on the potential for a Miller trade, and Yankees fans aren't going to like it. According to Gonzalez, it would be a "shock" if Miller is traded this summer.

"Things can change quickly this time of year, especially with A.J. Preller, but at this point, according to teams in the market for relievers, it would be a shock if the San Diego Padres traded Mason Miller before Monday's deadline," Gonzalez reports.

This update shouldn't come as a huge surprise to Yankees fans, as the odds for a Miller trade were already fairly low. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel have Miller at a 20% of just being traded, and the Yankees' odds would be significantly lower than that.

Miller has 2.7 bWAR this season with a 0.79 ERA, a 3-1 record, 28 saves, and 85 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched. He's the best closer in baseball right now, only rivaled by Toronto Blue Jays' Louis Varland and maybe Philadelphia Phillies' Jhoan Duran.

The 27-year-old two-time All-Star is under club control through 2029, meaning that if the Yankees could somehow add him, he'd be their closer for the next 3.5 seasons.

But this update from multiple MLB clubs that are looking to acquire bullpen help makes it fairly clear that a Miller trade isn't likely to happen.

Noting that it would be a "shock" if Miller is dealt is not a good sign; there's a real chance the superstar, flame-throwing closer could be traded.

The Yankees and their fans might need to move on to other bullpen options. But, until the Monday, August 3, 6:00 p.m. trade deadline passes, there will always be a chance that Preller and Brian Cashman pull off a stunner.
