On a day filled with emotion as Buzz Williams returned to Milwaukee, where he served as Marquette Golden Eagles’ coach from 2008-14, the Maryland Terrapins (3-1) made the first-year coach proud with an 89-82 win at Fiserv Forum on Saturday afternoon after overcoming the loss of star player Pharrel Payne to injury.
Payne delivered a thunderous dunk in the 12:14 mark of the second half, but the forward had both legs slip on both sides as he landed and looked to be in severe discomfort before being stretchered off the court to a local hospital in the Milwaukee area.
Payne finished with 13 points on 6-of-6 from the field, but added to the lengthy list of injuries for the Terrapins with Myles Rice and Solomon Washington already out in advance of the Marquette game.
After Payne being carted off and down 58-53, Maryland could have folded in the tent, but its guard play stepped in its most critical hour. Isaiah Watts delivered off the bench with 18 points, on 3-of-4 from three-point range.
David Coit finished with a team-high 19 points for Maryland, while Darius Adams chipped in with 16 points. Elijah Sanders grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and contributed with eight points in the win.
The Terrapins leaned on free throws down the stretch in the second half and delivered as they finished 23-of-27, while the Golden Eagles made 15 of 22 attempts.
Guard Chase Ross lived up to the star billing with a game-high 31 points, on 10-of-19 shooting in 33 minutes in defeat for Marquette (3-2).
Both teams return to action on Nov. 19 as the Terrapins look to build upon the win as they host the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, while the Golden Eagles look to avenge last season’s loss as they host the Dayton Flyers.
