Marlins' Janson Junk has the best pitcher name, and his stats are pretty awesome, too

Is there a better name for a pitcher than Janson Junk?

The alliteration is just the cherry on top of a hurler with the last name Junk.

The big right-hander pitches for the Miami Marlins, and he's dealing right now.

After seven shutout innings on Saturday, Junk has a 2.68 ERA this season.

Junk is an unlikely major leaguer. He was a 22nd-round pick of the Yankees in 2017 out of Seattle University.

He made his MLB debut in 2021 and has barely stuck around since.

He threw four games for the Angels in 2021, three for the Angels in 2022, two for the Brewers in 2023, five for the Brewers in 2024, one for the A's in 2024 and has now made 10 appearances for the Marlins this season.

Junk isn't a huge strikeout guy, at 7.6 per nine innings. But he has been getting the job done this season.

The 29-year old does have a deep pitch mix.

Junk throws his four-seam fastball 37.5% of the time.

Then it's his slider (29.4%), sweeper (15.2%), curveball (12.8%) and changeup (5.0%).

The sweeper and curveball are nearly identical speeds but have different movement paths, and he uses the sweeper against righties and the curve against lefties.

Junk is highly calculated with his junk, and right now, it's working.
