Marlins cut ties with failed $3.5 million signing

The Miami Marlins shelled out $3.5 million in the 2021 international free agency period to sign Yiddi Cappe.

It's safe to say that wasn't money well spent.

The Marlins have released Cappe as the new season gets underway. The news was reported by Fish On First, which follows Miami's minor league system.

From sources, the #Marlins have released infielder Yiddi Cappe.

Cappe was Miami’s highest priced international signing in 2021 for $3.5 million. His highest level reached was Double-A.

Cappe signed out of Cuba and is now 23 years old.

He has appeared all over the infield in the minor leagues but never found a real breakthrough.

Cappe has played just six Double-A games, going 3-for-19 at that level.

He played his most steady action at the High-A level for Beloit in the Marlins' organization. Across parts of three seasons there, Cappe played 236 games and hit .234 with 11 home runs and 53 stolen bases.

Cappe hit .250 in his minor league career overall, but that was propped up by earlier success in the low minors.

At 23, Cappe could still pursue another opportunity in baseball and probably get one. He's never been in a different organization.

He also put his skills on display at the World Baseball Classic, going 3-for-12 with two doubles and a triple.

Now, Cappe hits the open market and will hope there's someone out there who remembers his potential and still believes in some of it.
