For the 2026-27 NBA season, the Phoenix Suns are one man short in their center rotation. Mark Williams looked set to retain his starting spot, but unfortunately, he tore the labrum in his left shoulder.
It is quite a major injury, so Williams will have to miss an extended period of time. This could open the door for the rest of the Suns, but the two players who will benefit the most are Oso Ighodaro and Khaman Maluach.
Mark Williams' injury could be a blessing in disguise for the Suns
Williams had quite a steady campaign in the 2025-26 season. He played 60 games and started 55 of them, which is a career high for Williams because he has historically dealt with injuries.
That earned him a three-year contract worth $38 million, which is a decent amount for him. Unfortunately, he got injured during an offseason workout, and shoulder injuries are notorious for being tricky to recover from.

The Suns must pivot now, and that is why Ighodaro and Maluach can benefit from the changes. Most people are excited to see the latter because he was quite impressive during the 2026 NBA Summer League.
Ighodaro is a steady presence, which is probably the reason why he will start most of the games with Williams on the sidelines. However, the upside with Maluach is undeniable, especially with the development he has shown with his jump shot.
No matter who takes the starting spot, the Suns have softened the blow from Williams' injury. They have a decent rotation with their centers, so Williams can maximize his time on the sidelines to fully recover.
