Since Mark Cuban sold the Dallas Mavericks, the franchise has undergone significant changes, from its roster to its front office leadership.
Amid all those developments, the relationship between Cuban and the organization's new ownership appears to have deteriorated completely. Now, the growing tension between Cuban and Dallas Mavericks majority owner Patrick Dumont has escalated into a major legal dispute.
Cuban has filed a lawsuit against Mavericks majority owner Patrick Dumont, claiming he was excluded from the team's arena development plans and key business opportunities. He also alleges that Dumont failed to honor a "handshake agreement" that was supposed to allow Cuban to continue overseeing basketball operations after selling the franchise in 2023.
A Rule 202 petition is a legal procedure unique to Texas that allows a party to obtain depositions and documents before officially filing a lawsuit in order to investigate potential legal claims. In his filing, Cuban explained that the dispute stems from what he believes was a binding agreement reached when he sold his majority ownership stake for $3.5 billion in late 2023.
"Dumont did not fulfill his end of this agreement, and I did not retain control over basketball operations. Instead, former General Manager Nico Harrison was put in charge, leading to the trade of Luka Dončić. When I discussed this with Dumont over the phone, he told me: 'Why would I give you control of a $4 billion asset?'" Cuban said via court documents.
However, the Adelson and Dumont families possess a contractual provision that gives them the right to force the purchase of an additional 20% of Cuban's remaining 27% ownership stake. As a result, many legal experts believe this Rule 202 filing represents Cuban's opening move in what could become a lengthy and high-profile legal battle.
The relationship between Cuban and the Mavericks' new ownership now appears to be beyond repair. Earlier in 2026, Cuban reportedly explored the possibility of regaining his controlling interest in the franchise. But those efforts were firmly rejected by the current ownership group.
