Mariners sign recently released Cubs reliever with 3.53 ERA

With a five-game losing streak, the Seattle Mariners are fading fast from the American League Wild Card race. 

Still, the AL West club has made a handful of roster moves in preparation for one final postseason push. 

On Tuesday, the Mariners announced that they've signed left-hander Hoby Milner to a minor league deal. 

The Chicago Cubs recently released Milner after he posted a respectable 3.53 ERA in 38 appearances with the NL Central club. 

Milner is a 10-year Major League veteran who made his big league debut in 2017 with the Philadelphia Phillies. 

He struck out just 12.1% of the batters he faced and kept his walk rate at 6%, 2.5% below league average. 

Milner throws from a sidearm delivery and primarily relies on his sinker to induce ground balls and weak contact.

Seattle will likely use the lefty as an innings eater and in low-leverage situations. 

Milner surpassed the 64-inning threshold in each of the past four seasons before 2026. 

Last winter, Milner signed a one-year, $3.75 million contract with the Cubs.
