Mariners part ways with 26-year old outfielder as Astros pounce

The Seattle Mariners have lost an outfielder to a division rival.

The Houston Astros were the team that pounced with a Saturday waiver claim to complete the roster moves.

The player on the move is Rhylan Thomas, with the move being announced by the Mariners themselves:

Thomas was available because the Mariners had recently designated him for assignment to remove him from the 40-man roster.

The 26-year old lefty has played in just three games in his MLB career, all in 2025. In that time, he was 1-for-8 at the plate (.125 average) with a double, two RBI and a walk.

He's a former 11th-round pick by the New York Mets in the 2022 MLB Draft by the New York Mets out of USC.

This season, Thomas has appeared in 31 games for Triple-A Tacoma. He's hitting .260 with three doubles, two home runs and six steals.

His career minor league OPS is .756, so he's been a solid but not great player in the minors.

Given his track record, Thomas is likely to serve more as organizational depth for Houston rather than any kind of MLB solution, but it's still an interesting narrative to see his next stop after being discarded by the Mariners as being the Astros.
