The Seattle Mariners didn't hold Colt Emerson down in the minor leagues any longer. He's up at the MLB level for the first time this season.
He isn't playing shortstop, though. That's still J.P. Crawford's spot. But Crawford's work in the field is quickly setting up for an obvious swap.
Simply put, Crawford has been miserable with his glove and arm all season.
His range ranks in the 1st-percentile in MLB, one of the 10-worst players in the entire sport in the Outs Above Average metric, where Crawford is a negative-7 so far.
Crawford also ranks in the 12th-percentile in arm strength, which wouldn't be as big a deal if Crawford could at least throw on target.

But this weekend, he had one of the widest errant throws you'll ever see, and then he had a triple-clutch moment on a simple grounder where he still almost yanked wide.
While no one likes to utter the word, it seems like Crawford may have the yips.
And believe it or not, those two throws mentioned already were both on Monday.
He had one that might've been even worse on Sunday:

Mariners manager Dan Wilson can't keep plugging Crawford into the lineup at shortstop. There's no way that's the best move.
Emerson is in town. Crawford has to figure himself out in the field, but in the meantime, Seattle has a solution right there to be used.
The Mariners can't afford to have Crawford keep throwing the ball all over the diamond.
