Mariners give odd update on free agent Eugenio Suarez

6 hours ago 3

The Seattle Mariners appear to need a third baseman, at least on paper.

Eugenio Suarez is a third baseman who just played for the Mariners at the tail end of 2025, and had one prior stint in Seattle, too. He's still a free agent, as well.

Except it's not sounding like the Mariners plan to sign him.

Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto was on local radio Friday night when he shared this tidbit:

"He fits emotionally...but that could be problematic in continuing to build our roster..I wouldnt say thats likely at this point."

The idea of Suarez fitting the team emotionally does make sense. He's a popular teammate and has a lot of Mariners fans on his side after two separate tenures in the city.

It's fascinating, though, that Dipoto doesn't think that's enough to necessarily get a deal done.

Without Suarez, the Mariners either have to play glove-first Ben Williamson or shortstop prospect Colt Emerson at third base.

Suarez is the most proven of that potential group. He slugged 49 homers in 2025, the first 36 with the Diamondbacks and then 13 more with Seattle once he was traded at the end of July.

His peripheral numbers were worse with the Mariners, and maybe they feel they should try to avoid his decline. At the same time, there's something to be said for a guy who fits the team and the clubhouse off the field.

It just doesn't sound like Dipoto is going to use that reality to make this decision on Suarez.
