Mariners' Eugenio Suarez makes MLB history to ensure trade deadline decision paid off

9 hours ago 2

Eugenio Suarez was supposed to be the prize of the MLB trade deadline.

The Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman was ready to come and play any position and to contribute his slugging to a contender's lineup.

In the end, the Seattle Mariners were the team that pounced in time and with enough to get Suarez.

The only problem initially was that Suarez didn't look at all like the hitter who had just played in the All Star Game when he was still with Arizona.

By the end of the regular season, Suarez had picked up his pace some, but nothing prepared his fanbase for this.

He opened the scoring with a solo home run in his first at bat of ALCS Game 5.

And then with the game tied 2-2 late, and the bases loaded, Suarez launched a grand slam.

He's the seventh player in postseason history to launch a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning or later.

The list, via Mariners PR:

  • Edgar Martinez 1995
  • Edgardo Alfonzo 1999
  • Nelson Cruz 2011
  • Miguel Montero 2016
  • Howie Kendrick 2019
  • Freddie Freeman 2024

And now Suarez has joined the rest of the stars on this list.

Because of Suarez, the Mariners are now officially a game away from the first World Series appearance in franchise history.

That's why they traded for Suarez, for him to deliver huge moments in the clutch.

And now Seattle is closing in on a dream come true, thanks to Suarez.
