Eric Dane's Girlfriend Janell Shirtcliff Shares Touching Tribute After His Death

Maria Shriver is focusing on what really matters.

Days after Eric Dane died on Feb. 19 following a battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), the journalist shared how the Grey's Anatomy alum's passing left her with a heartbreaking reminder.

"Eric and I were scheduled to have lunch two weeks ago, but he wasn't feeling well that morning, so we rescheduled for next week," Maria explained in the Feb. 21 edition of her Sunday Paper newsletter. "His passing is another powerful reminder that today is all any of us have. Next week isn't guaranteed."

Maria and Eric—who shared kids Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, with estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart—had been in touch after the actor began working with her Penguin publishing imprint on his upcoming memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, which is being released Nov. 3.

"My team at The Open Field was honored when Eric chose our imprint to publish his memoir," she wrote. "He told me he wanted to write his book to share his story with the world. He wrote it so that his family had something to be proud of."

The 70-year-old also commended Eric's advocacy after he opened up about his diagnosis last April.

"Eric bravely shared his ALS diagnosis with the world over this past year," she reflected. "He advocated for increased research and showed up in every way he could to focus our attention on this devastating neurological disease."

After the Euphoria actor's death at 53, Maria—mom to kids Katherine Schwarzenegger, 36, Christina Schwarzenegger, 33, Patrick Schwarzenegger, 32, and Christopher Schwarzenegger, 28, with ex Arnold Schwarzenegger—promised her publishing company would do his story justice in the memoir.

"Godspeed, Eric," she wrote in her Feb. 19 Instagram tribute. "It was an honor to know you, and we will honor your story."

As for what readers can expect from the book? Eric reflected on how his sudden diagnosis completely transformed his life and his perspective.

"I wake up every morning, and I'm immediately reminded that this is real—this illness, this challenge and that's exactly why I'm writing this book," he explained in the Open Field press release in December. "I want to capture the moments that shaped me—the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted—so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart."
