The Boston Red Sox suffered a tough blow on Friday with prized free agent acquisition Alex Bregman leaving the game early. On Saturday, Bregman was placed on the IL with what Alex Cora said was a "significant" quad injury.
In turn, that meant the promotion of Marcelo Mayer, the No. 2 prospect in the Red Sox organization. He was the No. 4 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, and Red Sox fans have been waiting to see him at the big league level.
Well, the fans got their wish on Saturday. Mayer was called up and got the start in Game 2 of the doubleheader. As Mayer made his debut, the fans gave him a massive standing ovation.

“It was awesome. I’ver never experienced anything like that in my life. I actually just got done texting my friends and parents about that moment. So it’s definitely something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
Mayer went 0-for-4 at the plate in his debut with three strikeouts and the Red Sox lost, 2-1, but it will be a day Mayer never forgets.
