Maple Leafs send Marner to contender in blockbuster deal

Perhaps the biggest domino of NHL free agency has just fallen.

In a sign-and-trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights, the Maple Leafs will send Mitch Marner to Vegas, according to Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Mitch Marner has signed an 8-year deal x $12 million ($96 million total) with #LeafsForever, coordinated in conjunction with #VGK, on a sign-and-trade to Vegas. This is pending a trade call, which will send the package back to Toronto for his rights,” Seravalli’s post read.

The details as to what Vegas will send to Toronto in return is not yet known as the story is still breaking.

Marner’s future with the Maple Leafs was in doubt and was speculated about since the Maple Leafs’ season ended in the second round of the playoffs, where Toronto blew a 2-0 series lead against the Florida Panthers.

For Vegas, the Golden Knights get a star that can help them get back to a deep playoff run. Vegas was ousted by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the playoffs in five games. Marner finished the regular season with 102 points on 27 goals and 75 assists. He also recorded 13 points in the Maple Leafs’ 13-game playoff run.

Regardless on who Vegas sends to Toronto, the Golden Knights receive a top line right winger in Marner. Vegas will be able to pair the three-time All-Star with center Jack Eichel assuming Vegas holds onto Eichel.

The trade makes Vegas a bigger threat to the rest of the West.
