The ever-growing rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres has escalated into levels that could be compared to the Houston Astros-Texas Rangers and even the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees.
And Thursday night in the "City of Angels" only added fuel to the fire.
In the top of the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium, with the Padres holding a comfortable 5-0 lead over their NL West counterparts, Dodgers reliver Jack Little hurled a 93-mph fastball high and inside, smacking Padres star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. right on his left hand.
After the eighth hit by pitch of the series, both benches immediately cleared, but a brawl did not ensue between the bitter rivals.
Shortly after that, in the bottom of the ninth, Padres closer Robert Suarez hit Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani under his right shoulder blade, but a classy Ohtani casually waved his team back into the dugout, not wanting another potential brawl occurring.
Following the game, which saw the Padres win 5-3, third baseman Manny Machado did not hold back his fighting words for his former team.
"They gotta pray that X-ray comes back negative tomorrow," Machado said. "They better put out a candle."
Machado spent the second half of the 2018 season with the Boys in Blue, leading the team all the way to the World Series, where they lost in five games to the Boston Red Sox, before signing a 10-year, $300 million contract with San Diego before the 2019 season, where he has been since.
