(Bloomberg) — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim named new trade and economy chiefs on Tuesday, as part of a broad revamp to address some monthslong vacancies in his government.

Johari Abdul Ghani is the new Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, replacing Zafrul Aziz who stepped down in early December after his senatorship expired. Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir was named Economy Minister, filling in the vacancy left by Rafizi Ramli’s departure earlier this year.

Anwar needs to sharpen the government’s policy execution and reinforce stability within his multi-party cabinet as it enters a more demanding phase, with economic growth set to moderate next year and exports vulnerable to lingering geopolitical risks. Policymakers are also seeking to press ahead with subsidy rationalization to repair public finances without alienating voters.

Johari is one of three vice-presidents of the United Malays National Organisation, a key ally in Anwar’s coalition government. He previously helmed the Plantation and Commodities Ministry, a position that his UMNO colleague, Noraini Ahmad, is taking over.

In recent months, Johari has been taking on a more expanded role in the cabinet. He became Malaysia’s coordinating minister for Russia in May and two months later, began to oversee the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability in an acting capacity.

Akmal, a member of Anwar’s People’s Justice Party who held the position of Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, was promoted to become a full minister to replace his ally, Rafizi.

Anwar also appointed Liew Chin Tong, the outgoing deputy trade minister to be his new deputy at the finance ministry, which he helms.

The appointees will be sworn in on Wednesday by Malaysia’s king, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, before attending a cabinet meeting later in the day.

The government “will continue to prioritize strengthening governance and enhancing the effectiveness of policy implementation,” Anwar said in a post on X before the cabinet announcement.

It’s the leader’s second cabinet reshuffle since taking office in 2022, with the last reorganization made two years ago.

- Outgoing Human Resources Minister Steven Sim named new Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, replacing Ewon Benedick who quit last month ahead of the Sabah state polls
- Ramanan Ramakrishnan, a vice-president of Anwar’s party, will replace Sim as Human Resources Minister. The former was previously Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister
- Hannah Yeoh moves from helming the Youth and Sports Ministry to become Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories)
- Mohammed Taufiq Johari, a first-term lawmaker from Anwar’s party, is the new Youth and Sports Minister, replacing Yeoh
