Lowest golf scores in major tournament history: Lucas Herbert, Sam Burns, Ryan Fox shoot 62 at 2026 British Open

3 hours ago 3

Friday's second round at the Open Championship belonged to Lucas Herbert.

The Australian golfer started blazing hot, sitting at 8-under par through his first 12 holes, and he at one point moved to 9-under before settling for 8-under and a 62 to finish his day on top of the leaderboard.

Herbert fell short of a standalone record by bogeying his final hole, but his 62 puts him in rare territory in a major.

By the end of the day, Sam Burns surged to join him with a 62 of his own, allowing the two to make history together. Then, on Saturday, Ryan Fox matched that figure in Round 3, posting his own 62.

Here's how the rounds by Herbert, Burns and Fox round compare to the lowest scores in major tournament history.

Lowest golf scores in major tournament history

Herbert tied the record for lowest score in a major tournament round with his 62 on Friday, matching four other players and five total occasions in which it happened:

Branden Grace became the first to shoot a 62 in a major round on the same course in 2017, before Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry all joined him within the last three years.

62 is definitively the lowest score in a single round in a major, by total score. Nick Price and Greg Norman might have something to say about it though, as they each shot a 63 in the Masters at Augusta National, which is a Par 72. They were 9-under for the day, while Herbert, Burns, Fox and others were 8-under.

Still, all are a part of history in some way, and three more players have joined the club.

Lowest rounds in PGA Tour history

The record for lowest round in PGA Tour history is 58, set by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship. After Furyk's 58, a 59 has been achieved 14 different times, including once by Furyk himself.

All of those scores come in well ahead of the major record of 62, though Herbert nearly cut into that gap before falling short of a 61 on the final hole Friday.

Who is Lucas Herbert?

The 30-year-old Herbert is from Australia and has one win on the PGA Tour in addition to three wins on the European Tour, having won the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in 2021.

Herbert hasn't played on the PGA Tour since 2023, as he joined LIV Golf in 2024 and plays alongside Cameron Smith for Ripper GC.

Herbert has never earned a top-10 finish in a major, topping out at a 13th-place finish at the 2022 PGA Championship. Whether or not he wins at Royal Birkdale, Herbert has a chance to beat that mark.
