The Detroit Tigers could eventually face a difficult situation when it comes to the long-term future of Tarik Skubal. While Detroit has developed the left-hander into one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball history, keeping him long-term still isn’t guaranteed.
If anything, it doesn’t seem likely right now.
FanSided’s Zachary Rotman was correct in his writing, noting that the Tigers will struggle to compete financially with franchises like the Los Angeles Dodgers if Skubal reaches free agency.
“If the Tigers were unwilling to even entertain the thought of paying Skubal now, how can anyone choose to believe they'll win a bidding war with the likes of the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets in the mix?” Rotman wrote. “It's clear that Skubal is not interested in taking any sort of hometown discount to stay with Detroit based on how he's acted this entire process.”
Rotman’s point is that there’s often a financial gap between smaller-market teams and the Dodgers. The Dodgers, along with some others, have done whatever it takes to get better.
Not to say that the Tigers haven’t done so, but it’s different.
If the Dodgers ultimately pursue Skubal, Detroit won’t win in terms of a money offer unless something changes. That’s why many think trading him wouldn’t be the worst idea.
