Liza Minnelli details ‘betrayal’ of catching husband Peter Allen in bed with a man

Liza Minnelli’s first marriage to Peter Allen broke down when she walked in and found him having “passionate sex” with a man.

“This was a betrayal of our marital intimacy,” the “Cabaret” star wrote in her new memoir, “Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!,” “our deepest trust in each other, and at first I couldn’t process it. It was impossible for my heart to absorb what my eyes had seen.”

Minnelli, 79, added that “after the other gentleman quickly dressed and disappeared,” she stood frozen until Allen came over and held her tightly, and they both began to weep.

“He felt terrible and told me for the first time, ‘Liza, I love you more than anyone in the world and I’m gay,'” she wrote.

The “Arrested Development” alum said that the two had an “active and very fulfilling sexual life,” yet the “I Go To Rio” crooner explained that he was also attracted to men.

“He said he had tried desperately to be monogamous, but his feelings for men would not go away,” Minnelli recalled. “It was a fact of his life and now mine.”

The Oscar winner said that the infidelity “didn’t break” them.

“In that sad moment of discovery, we still felt enormous love for each other. Neither of us wanted the marriage to end.”

The couple had met through Minnelli’s mother, Judy Garland, and quickly fell in love. They were engaged in 1965 and married two years later.

Despite being deeply in love with Allen, Minnelli confessed in her memoir, which came out Tuesday, that during her engagement she had a sweet affair with the French singer Charles Aznavour, whom she met at a cocktail party, and wrote that the two were “instantly attracted to each other.”

She then found out where he was staying before starting a Canadian tour, turned up at the hotel, and traveled with him throughout his tour.

“I loved him,” she admitted. “I also loved Peter Allen. We weren’t yet married. Was life a delicious confusion? Yes. Did I follow my heart? Guilty as charged.”

Minnelli and Allen eventually divorced in 1974, but they “continued to genuinely love and respect each other in the years ahead.”

The “Arthur” star explained that she stayed with Allen because they shared a deep “spiritual connection” and their “mutual attraction never wavered.”

She credited Allen for helping her to unpack her dysfunctional childhood and writing “beautiful” songs inspired by their time together.

Minnelli went on to have three more marriages, and Allen had a long-term relationship with model Gregory Connell. The two met in 1973 and were together until Cornell’s death eleven years later.
