New manager Andoni Iraola has put Liverpool through their preseason paces ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Following in the footsteps of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, also held across North America, Liverpool visited Nashville, New York City, and Chicago as they looked to build fitness and bank minutes ahead of what should be a long and testing season.

Some Reds players participated in the World Cup this summer and needed extra time to rest and recover, while others had a full run-up to the start of the Premier League season.

The Sporting News brings you a look at Liverpool's preseason as they get ready to play their first competitive match on August 23.

Liverpool began their preseason slate with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville on July 25. The Reds got goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Federico Chiesa bracketing halftime, while young stars Kieran Morris and Lewis Koumas also added goals of their own.

Next up was a meeting with Wrexham in New York City on July 29, which ended in a 1-0 victory. The Reds then threw away a 2-0 lead against Leeds United in Chicago on Sunday in their final preseason game in the U.S.

They will now prepare for a meeting with Monaco at Anfield on August 9, two weeks out from their opening game of the Premier League season against Newcastle United.

Where are Liverpool playing preseason games?

Three of Liverpool's five preseason matches took place in the United States, with games in New York City and Chicago.

Then, they travelled back to England and play two more matches at their home stadium of Anfield. There were actually three matches in total, with a split-squad game against Como taking place behind closed doors on the same day that the teams met in front of a crowd.

This has been a regular feature of Liverpool's preseason plans in recent years — they played a double-header against Athletic Club last August, winning 3-2 and 4-1.

When did World Cup players return to Liverpool?

All World Cup participants are allowed 21 days of rest when their tournament comes to an end.

Liverpool had seven players participate in the World Cup, three of whom were with the Dutch national team. Ryan Gravenberch played in the friendly in Chicago, but Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk were not back in action until the Monaco game.

Alisson was also back for that 3-2 reverse, where Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak were on the scoresheet.

Alexis Mac Allister was part of Argentina's run to the World Cup final and returned for the behind-closed-doors goalless draw against Como.

When is Liverpool's first Premier League game of 2026/27?

Liverpool's campaign begins with a trip to face Newcastle United on Sunday, August 23. The kickoff for that game is 4:30 p.m. local time (11:30 a.m. ET).

Liverpool then alternate home and away all the way through late October when they have their first consecutive home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion, and Arsenal.
