The Michigan Wolverines are in a position to make the Final Four for the first time since 2018, but also the ninth time in program history. The current Wolverines team has the best win total of any Michigan team. In 1989 Michigan won their only National Championship. That year they had 33 wins. This team is currently 34-3.
The statistical leader for the Wolverines in Yaxel Lendeborg. The UAB transfer is averaging 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block per game. It is a slight drop from the 18 and 11 he was averaging with UAB, but that was to be expected jumping up in competition level.
This entire storyline got much more interesting yesterday when Lendeborg said, "I feel like we're the best team in college basketball. We might be the best Michigan team ever."
While no one is going to knock his confidence or how Michigan has played to this point, but that's a bold statement. Especially considering there are two Michigan teams that sit at the top. The 1989 National Championship team that is also the only team to ever win a Natty with an interim head coach.
For many fans, after 1989, there is only one other Michigan team that will come to mind. The "Fab Five". That team was expected to cut down the nets. Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. Three of those players went onto have stellar NBA careers. If Michigan wins today vs Tennessee, we can legitimately begin having that conversation for who is No. 2. The debate for No. 1 must include cutting down nets.
