LIV Golf captain says Team Championships ‘highly unlikely’ to happen

Another LIV Golf event might be in jeopardy. 

Cleeks Golf Club captain Martin Kaymer told Today’s Golfer on Wednesday that it’s “highly unlikely” that the tour’s final event, which is one of LIV’s most lucrative, will happen next month at The Cardinal at Saint John’s in Michigan. 

Kaymer told the outlet that there was a “5 percent” chance the Team Championship would take place as planned and indicated that the infrastructure for the event hadn’t even been built on the course. 

LIV Golf’s future has been up in the air since the Saudi Public Investment Fund revealed it would be ending its financial backing of the rebel golf league after the 2026 season.

Since then, CEO Scott O’Neil has been attempting to find investors to raise $350 million to keep the league going. 

This week is the start of the league’s LIV Golf UK event, and Kaymer was part of Tuesday’s captains’ meeting. 

“I know that Indianapolis most likely is happening,” Kaymer said. “There was a conversation yesterday. Michigan, highly unlikely. So basically, what we already knew. That’s why I think it became a captains’ meeting and not a players’ meeting, because they couldn’t give us much more than we had before.”

LIV already canceled an event in late June in New Orleans, allegedly due to concerns over the temperatures and the course conditions.

Kaymer said he was “disappointed” over the likelihood that the Michigan event would not take place.

“I heard yesterday, actually, on the Golf Channel that there were talks that Indianapolis could become a team event instead of Michigan. That we don’t know. I think that would be a shame that we get reduced even more individual tournaments,” he said. “On the other hand, how do you want to have a team winning the whole season if you don’t have a team event? We need to be honest. The whole season was a bit of a… there was so much happening. Yeah. Cancelled New Orleans. Cancelled most likely the last event. So I think it’s important to just finish the season and hopefully we’ll have a plan for 2027.”

LIV Golf has not responded to The Post’s request for comment on the Michigan event. 

The comments by Kaymer are the latest blow for LIV Golf, which found out this week that it had lost a partner in the Asian Tour after it announced a strategic alliance with the PGA and European Tour.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday ahead of the LIV Golf UK event, Jon Rahm was noncommittal about whether he expected to be playing for LIV Golf in 2027. 

“I’m not going to share anything that I can’t share with you guys right now,” he said.

Kaymer was a bit more forthcoming with Today’s Golfer, saying that there was a hope “for a bit more information” when captains met with O’Neil. 

“I mean, we got the information, but we were more looking for decisions or what was happening next year,” he said. “And unfortunately, even Scott, he can’t tell us because he doesn’t know. It depends so much on the investors. Hopefully, I think there’s a lot of interest and it’s looking good.

“But we’ve all been there. If the signature is not there, then it doesn’t mean anything.”
