The Detroit Lions opened their 2025 campaign with plenty of frustration, and wide receiver Jameson Williams found himself right in the middle of it. In a 27-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, the NFL hit the former Alabama standout with an $11,593 fine for taunting.
Williams fined for taunting as Lions stumble in season opener
Williams, now entering his fourth season, was held in check for most of the night. He finished with just four receptions for 23 yards, but one of his few bright spots came late in the second quarter. Facing a 4th-and-2, Jared Goff connected with Williams for an 11-yard pickup that gave Detroit a much-needed first down.
Instead of just moving on to the next play, Williams let his emotions spill over. He got directly in the face of Packers cornerback Xavier McKinney, sparking a heated moment. No penalty flag came out during the game, though Green Bay’s Javon Bullard was whistled for illegal contact on the same sequence.

That didn’t stop the league office from stepping in. Williams was docked the standard fine amount for taunting, the same figure McKinney was separately hit with for his own incident earlier in the half. To make matters worse for Detroit, safety Brian Branch was also penalized, drawing $23,186 in fines for both a facemask and a taunting violation.
The Lions will try to regroup quickly with another divisional test on deck. They head to Chicago in Week 2 to take on the Bears at Soldier Field. Meanwhile, the Packers are off to a hot 2-0 start, fresh off their Thursday night victory over Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.
