Lions trade rumor from Dianna Russini reveals Brad Holmes' focus at the deadline

The Detroit Lions could stand to add players at multiple positions on the defensive side of the ball ahead of the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.

Three that come to mind are safety and cornerback, which have been ravaged by injury this season, and edge rusher, where the Lions need more depth behind Al-Quadin Muhammad and Aidan Hutchinson.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini provided some fresh trade rumors on Saturday and revealed that general manager Brad Holmes is making calls looking for safety and defensive line help.

"The Lions are looking for help at safety and defensive line," Russini reported.

Safety makes sense considering the fact that Kerby Joseph has been banged-up and is set to miss his second game this season. Detroit also has a shaky situation behind Joseph and its other starter, Brian Branch.

It isn't clear if Russini means interior defensive line help or if she's talking about an edge rusher. If it's the former, it would be odd for the Lions to be looking for help there.

After all, the Lions are well-stocked at the position. Alim McNeill is back and the team also sports D.J. Reader, Tyleik Williams, Roy Lopez and Pat O'Connor. The interior of the defensive line is actually one of the Lions' deepest groups.

We would venture to guess it's an edge rusher along the defensive line Holmes is looking for, as the Lions' interest in adding to the position has been reported by several outlets in recent weeks, yet we haven't heard anything about the interior.

"The Lions, Ravens, Commanders and (again) Eagles all have shown interest in adding edge rushers," Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported on Friday.

If the Lions do add an edge rusher, we wouldn't expect anything earth-shattering, as the team just invested a boatload of money in Hutchinson and have actually been better than expected at getting after the quarterback with the guys they have.
