Lions star's massive $212 million deal named Detroit's worst contract

The Detroit Lions made a major commitment to quarterback Jared Goff, with the team inking the veteran to a four-year, $212 million contract last offseason.

But one analyst, NFL Spin Zone's Lou Scataglia, thinks that was a mistake. In fact, he believes Goff's contract is the worst one the Lions have on the books in 2025.

"Jared Goff has revived his career with the Detroit Lions, but the playoff success just has not been there. Goff is near the top of the QB market with $53 million per year," he wrote. "At some point, the Lions are going to need their franchise QB to put this team on his back and take them on a run.

"If 2025 is yet another year where Detroit falls short in the postseason, what does that say about Goff?" Scataglia added. "The former LA Rams QB needs to show more on the field. The regular season stats are great, but that only goes so far."

Not only did Goff revive his career with the Lions, he also helped revive the franchise, which was in dire straits before he got there.

However, that only goes so far. Goff and the Lions must cash in while their Super Bowl window is open, but so far they haven't been able to do that.

Detroit was bounced from the postseason earlier than expected in 2024, and Goff's struggles played a big role in that. The veteran signal-caller tossed three picks and even lost a fumble in the loss to the Washington Commanders.

Now, none of that is to say the playoff loss was all on Goff, because it wasn't. He still managed to lead the Lions to 31 points, only for Detroit to be let down by a defense that surrendered a whopping 45.

No Lions fan will argue that Goff doesn't need to be better in the postseason, because he does.

To be honest, the Lions don't really have any glaringly bad contracts on the books, so it's easy to pick Goff because of his massive number.

But with the outrageous quarterback contracts in this day and age, Goff's definitely isn't that bad. Even just above-average quarterbacks are getting paid what Goff is, so we can't blame the Lions for giving him that money.
