The Detroit Lions are coming up on an important game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 of the NFL's season. The Lions are 2-1 going into the matchup, while the Panthers are 1-3, so this may seem like an easy win for Detroit, but there are no easy wins in the NFL.
If the Lions want to prove that their window for getting to the championship hasn't closed, they have to show up and win as many games as possible this season. Thankfully, the Lions have a lot of strong offensive players in the fold, but one just got hit with a massive punishment from the NFL.
Detroit Lions favorite gets one of the NFL's biggest fines
As the league's season moves on, the NFL issues punishments every week to certain players who go against the rules the weekend before. "The rules are intended to protect the players from unnecessary risk," the NFL explains on its official website, "promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans."
On Saturday, ahead of the Week 4 games, the NFL handed a Lions favorite a hefty punishment. It was actually the third-biggest fine of the weekend.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was fined $23,417 for an unnecessary roughness penalty involving the use of his helmet. The fine stemmed from an incident in the third quarter with 1:53 remaining, adding a significant financial penalty for the play.
So, Williams can't be a happy camper about that fine total for his Week 3 antics. But, the good news is that the NFL fines go to a good cause in the Professional Athletes Foundation, so it's not for nothing.
