Lionel Messi missed penalty kick: Argentina star's PK struggles continue with sensational save by Egypt goalkeeper

1 hour ago 4

Lionel Messi has scored more goals than any other player in World Cup history. He's also scored more goals than any other player at this year's tournament, finding the net in each game he has featured in thus far.

Given his prowess in and around the box, few players appear more trustworthy from the penalty spot than the 39-year-old. And yet, Messi's penalty record leaves something to be desired in recent games, an unfortunate tally that resurfaced once more after Messi missed his target during Argentina's Round of 16 match against Egypt.

Lionel Messi missed penalty kick

Messi stepped to the spot after Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan brought down Nicolas Tagliafico in the box.

The Argentine superstar sent a strike spiraling towards the frame. But his effort was tame, curling short of the bottom corner. Mostafa Shoubir got down quickly to parry Messi's effort away.

Messi was left to rue his underwhelming attempt outside of Shoubir's frame. With his miss, Messi became the first player to miss two penalties in a single tournament (excluding shootouts), per OptaJoe.
